How to use the linear feet calculator
- Enter the surface area in square feet.
- Use the actual exposed face width of the board, not its thickness.
- Add an allowance if needed, then turn the total length into purchasable stock lengths with a cut list.
The formula
Linear feet = coverage area (ft²) × 12 ÷ actual face width (in)
Worked example
Covering 100 ft² with boards 5.5 in wide needs about 218.182 linear feet. A 10% allowance increases the estimate to 240 linear feet.
Before you measure and cut
Linear feet is a length total. It does not specify the number of boards until you choose their lengths.
For tongue-and-groove products, use the exposed coverage width rather than the full manufactured width.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert board feet directly to linear feet?
Only when you know the thickness and width. Board feet measures volume; linear feet measures length.
Does this account for board gaps?
