How to use the panel glue-up calculator
- Enter the final panel width and the rough width of equal boards.
- Estimate material removed from each of the two jointed edges.
- Add the total extra width needed for trimming the glued panel and choose enough boards to cover it.
The formula
Usable board width = rough width − 2 × edge loss; boards = ceiling((finished width + trim allowance) ÷ usable width)
Worked example
For a 600 mm panel, 150 mm rough boards losing 2 mm from each edge, and 10 mm total trim allowance, five boards provide 730 mm before final trimming.
Before you measure and cut
This assumes both edges of every board are jointed. Boards with varying widths are better planned with an explicit cut list.
Width planning does not remove seasonal movement. Allow the finished panel to move in the surrounding construction.

Does this account for planer loss?
Only edge loss is included. Thickness planing and length trimming must be planned separately.
Why might the result seem wasteful?
The count rounds up to whole equal-width boards. You can rip or use a narrower final board if the grain and layout permit it.
