Formula, assumptions, and a worked example are below. All calculations stay in this page.

How to use the wood weight calculator

  1. Measure actual dimensions in millimeters.
  2. Enter quantity and a density appropriate to the species, product, and current moisture content.
  3. Read total mass and per-piece mass. Use the material supplier’s data where available.

The formula

Mass (kg) = length × width × thickness (mm) × quantity ÷ 1,000,000,000 × density (kg/m³)

Worked example

Four boards measuring 2400 × 200 × 25 mm have a volume of 0.048 m³. At 650 kg/m³, their estimated mass is 31.2 kg.

Before you measure and cut

Density varies with species and moisture. Wet lumber can weigh substantially more than a dry sample of the same dimensions.

Voids, hardware, coatings, and packaging are excluded. This is a material estimate, not a rated lifting capacity.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no exact weight for a wood species?

Species averages do not capture moisture, growth variation, or manufactured products. A measured density or product data sheet is more useful for a specific job.

Can I calculate plywood weight?

Yes, if you use the density of that panel product. The separate plywood weight tool accepts sheet sizes directly.
