How to use the plywood sheet calculator
- Measure and add the surface areas that need sheeting.
- Enter the actual sheet length and width in feet.
- Choose a project-specific allowance, then check the panel layout before buying.
The formula
Sheets = ceiling(total area × (1 + allowance ÷ 100) ÷ sheet area)
Worked example
Covering 250 ft² with 4 × 8 ft sheets and a 10% allowance requires 275 ft², or nine sheets when rounded up.
Before you measure and cut
Area division cannot prove that a list of rectangles fits. A long, narrow part can force an extra sheet even when the area appears sufficient.

Frequently asked questions
Why can actual sheet count be higher?
Orientation, grain, joint positions, kerf, and irregular shapes create unusable offcuts that a simple area estimate does not capture.
Does this deduct windows or doors?
Only if you subtract them from the area input. Small openings may not reduce sheet count because of the layout.
